‘Chedino & Family’ is a photographic documentary about gender reassignment in South Africa. Chedino (30) was born a boy but has been living the life of a woman for the past 15 years. Despite being called the Rainbow Nation, the situation for South Africa’s black and coloured LGBTI community is far from ideal. Chedino and others like her, have been threatened, attacked, verbally abused, and she has tried to commit suicide several times. But, despite everything, Chedino considers herself lucky. Her family and friends have accepted her for who she is and she has decided to go ahead with her gender transformation.
